OH, that snake showing up is something. I would have frozen too.
My hubs and I just discovered Terry Real, also. I am so impressed with him- first male therapist Ive heard talk about how the patriarchy affects partnerships. We've been listening to podcasts he's on the past few days and I think it is shifting something in our relationship, in a very good way. Thank GOD, or snakes!
I agree. I feel like Terry is in the air! Or maybe he always was just someone broke into my brain recently? IDK - but glad things are shifting for you...
I come from a society soaked/steeped/drenched/overflowing ( some body stop me !! ) in/with patriarchy which is almost never recognised or acknowledged.
I dunno what that snake did ( glad it did not literally :-)) but bringing in a venn between Mars and Venus require two, minimally, who are aware, sensitive, engaged and empathetic. Then magic can happen between them and equally importantly in the orientation of their family. The latter effect becomes a legacy.
I appreciate the trigger you provided. I guess I wish to be born ( a 1000 years later, please by which time patriarchy may have waned :-) as a woman.
Characteristically multidimensional and they nurture.
Men? They believe they are best at procreateling. Most suffer the one track, no mind syndrome!
In mythology snakes have many meanings and symbolisms. Mainly those of fertility, healing, and the cycles of life and death. I know it can be scary to see a snake (especially in your “safe” space!!) but it’s also your space of creation so fear aside it’s kind of beautiful. I once did a drawing of the ancient Phoenician goddess Astarte holding a snake in one hand (she was demonized by Christianity because she was a pagan goddess, but she was the main goddess of the levant region for thousands of years).
I SAW THAT. I mean I read that they could mean fertility! and this longing for a baby - Do you have a good resources for symbols? Like how to dknow about the levant region? Etc?
I’m from lebanon and I’ve always been interested in mythology so I have alot of books on the subject but you can find most of the information online! Look up “snake symbolism in mythology” and if you’re curious about Astarte goddess there is some info online about her too, she is the goddess the Greeks based Aphrodite on also.
Can you tell me more about the year of the snake and seeing a snake? I can also google - but interested in how others see it and seems like you understand more about it than I do ha ha
gaaaah! so many goosebumps and chills reading this!!!!! i am a fellow hard-core "freezer" so very much empathize and identify with that reaction... Also love love love that Terry Real quote - sharing with a dozen friends now ;)
I feel ya! I am telling myself right now that it is a divine coincidence. By which I mean that all the things happened and that is what makes it divine. IDK. Why is my brain always searching for more of an answer than what you gave? Also, Here changed my life...
aw, thank you. yes, lots of personal experiences with signs in that book! And in terms of why we keep searching for more of an answer, I think, like your essay shares, humans are wired to seek out certainty. It makes us feel secure and mystery, and living in mystery, on the other hand, is terrifying!
I have to say, that is not what I'd consider a smallish snake 😅 and so it seem, perhaps, that it's not a small sign either! The snake has those bright markings to say, "look at me! I am not to be ignored!" Plus, it's likely a milk snake? So not a threat. All together a good omen if I've ever seen one - and I don't typically dabble in interprering signs (but it sort of seems like an invitation to do so in my own life).
I think we both should. I think it is 100% an invitation to look for signs. I am finding it SO comforting. It feels very otherworldly - like beyond my ability to understand. What have you gotten for signs lately? I have also had hummingbirds...
This is kinda crazy. Something really, really hard happened a few days ago on top of an already hard time and I wondering if that thing that happened was a sign in a certain direction. And then I broke down and was like…do you want it to be a sign? Then I read this... Maybe if we want something to be a sign it’s a sign. 🪧
Um in a two week span I lost all of my business clients. For truly no fault of my own. People I’ve worked with ten plus years. I’m working toward being an artist and writer and launching my first collection soon and finally felt good about things after deaths, sicknesses, struggle et al, but then gobsmacked. Godsmacked? Is this a sign, divine? or um get a job silly.
That’s when I was like do you want it to be a sign? (I mean I still need to figure out how to make money lol) but it felt like a big revelation.
OMG I have to wait a whole week to read the rest?!?!
I definitely want to believe in signs but only when they are good/positive, lol. A few weeks ago we had three vultures in our tree in the backyard, and you can bet I immediately was hitting Google to see what it meant, although I'm still not sure. I think it speaks to a sort of mystical connection with the world that is maybe missing because I don't have a particular religion I've assigned myself to. It's a comfort to feel like there is an explanation out there for certain things that feel impossible to grasp. After my dad died, a pair of ducks hung out in our yard for a few days (we have no water or any other feature they would want, and I've never seen them before or since) but it was a comfort to feel like they were somehow connected with that - apparently ducks are connected with spirits that have passed on because they can travel on more than one realm (water, earth, sky).
This is a really long-winded way of saying that I think as humans we are always searching for meaning, and signs can be a really beautiful, special way of filling in the blanks for things that feel unknowable.
Hi Laura, thanks for reading and being excited to hear the rest of the story. I mean, I don't want to let you down, but I think that it has a goodish ending? THE DUCKS. I am sorry to hear about your loss, but I think the practice of assigning a location for your loved one makes our brains feel better. Or it does for me too. I think as a person like you without a particular religion, I long for these moments to help me understand why things are the way they are. Are we both committing to seeing positive signs? I am in...
First I need to know if the snake is still in the studio!
I was up on Skyline. The memoir is called Dog Medicine, How My Dog Saved Me From Myself, and it took on a life of its own. The snake felt like a really beautiful omen. It seems like it was the same for you. 💗
It's out! I had so many people (like two) reach out to see if they could come and help me catch it. My friend Candace came and now we are bonded forever over this snake catching... but everyone is fine and the snake is safe and was a milk snake.
Spiders are my sign creature but I’m so fucking scared of them and physically creeped out that googling the meaning is impossible! 😂 The image search results are my nightmare.
The synchronicity and linked connections often make me feel like I must be on the right track, hoping there is a track.
Your hormonal response after is wild. Wishing I could bottle some of that and add to my relationship as needed.
I love this post and love signs (especially from nature) and see this post AS a sign because I saw a snake just yesterday!
My best story of a great sign is that I had just listened to a podcast interviewing a woman who spoke about signs and how nature gives them constantly, so just keep your eyes peeled if you need guidance with something. A few days later, my husband and I got in a big fight and I stormed away to take a walk. On the walk I found a single butterfly wing and it was so sad and so beautiful. I picked it up and the message was instant: you can’t fly with only one wing. It’s sitting framed with all our other nature findings on our mantle…
OH, that snake showing up is something. I would have frozen too.

But there is hope :-)))

It’s the year of the snake, and the one that decided to come into your space was red — I think it’s a whole lot of good luck knocking at your door ❤️

He is def having a moment. I feel like I like how he makes people take accountability but without blame or shame attached.
GURLLLLLLL, I totally believe in signs and spiritual guidance and all of this and I'm getting all the excited goosebumps reading it.
BUT how would you explain it? I want to believe so bad... I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW!!
That’s the beauty of signs! It’s beyond explanation and speaks directly to our souls

I saw a snake hiking in the East Bay Hills before my memoir was published and it felt like a very good sign. Turned out it was! 🙌
Congrats! What hike were you on? What type of snake? And more importantly tell me more about this memoir!
