OK, so I have been a fan of Sarah for years. It’s my understanding that she is the most famous person talking about the connection between the moon and our bodies. She is an artist living in Los Angeles who teaches magic (she believes everyone is intuitive, it’s a muscle that we practice and can tap into when we need a little help).
I reached out to her because I needed help. I have always felt a deep connection with the moon, and I allow myself to take comfort in its phases, even though I really don’t understand how and why. The push and pull of the water in my body, is what I told myself. I wrote a book about the moon, and its control over my moods.
But Sarah, she is the real expert. Turns out, the moon patterns and dances have been hiding in plan sight. We have been evolving, changing growing for all of time. And will be for the rest of time (in the ways that we as humans can understand it).
The thing I like about Sarah is she works ancient terms in a modern context. It is both secular and spiritual. Last night at dinner I mentioned to my mother-in-law that when reading or hearing Sarah speak, you have to forget, or let go of your past understandings of the words she uses, and listen to the ways in which she describes and reattributes meaning within.
For example, a term that I feel we use all the time these days is magic. What does magic even mean? Everyone probably has a different understanding of what it is.
Magic is the art of changing consciousness at will. - Dion Fortune
Lunar Magic is about noticing the transformation taking place in our relationship to the moon. That time and consistency are required. That the moon cycles mirror our creative process. The moon is dualistic. That is why I am attracted to it. That it contradicts itself and yet is always present. And I am obsessed with feeling it all – the good, the bad, the ugly, and the moon does this.
You have to feel it to heal it, or so the saying goes.
A thing that really has stuck with me, is this idea of using the moon/a spiritual practice as a form of self-improvement. Sarah says it is not. That self-improvement is motivated by something different – intentions matter. I am conditioned to think that any use of my time that is not spent on making money, or improvement in a capitalist sense is a misuse of this short precious life I have. Writing that right now feels silly. It feels oppositional to the things in life that I actually find meaning in.
This dance, this relationship with the moon and ourselves, if not for self-improvement, then what for? The intention (intentions matter) is to live in alignment with your values, it’s the practice of finding your truth and acceptance. It’s a support system that you can tap into to help you uncover what wholeness is for you.
Sarah has a protection magic workshop coming up… I feel the need for this right now.
Or if you want to explore directly your relationship with the moon, pre-order her Many Moons Planner here. She also has a podcast you can listen to here.
I don’t get paid from these emails – the people I ask to talk to are people who I feel are genuinely exploring the nature of being right now and offer support systems that may or may not suit you. Sarah’s work with the moon has been in my orbit for 10 years, I have been an admirer of her. There is something, I am not sure totally what yet, longing in us all to connect to the earth, the moon, and the stars.
Why at this moment do we see things of the occult in popular media? What longing is that speaking to for you? Using the moon could be one of many directions you could go in to investigate that for yourself.
I myself am a huge fan of the dark/new moon phase 🌙
This is the second time that The Moon Studio has popped into my life in the last twelve hours, and approaching an Aries Full Moon! I'm paying attention, universe.
